Caroline Purdom read Economics at Reading University and was commissioned into the Royal Air Force in 1991. She retired in 2011 following a successful tour at RAF Northolt and was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2011. Caroline joined Davenies in 2013 as the Bursar and away from school, she is a Brown Owl, an enthusiastic gardener and a fair weather cyclist.
Deputy Head - Mr R Cooke
Roland Cooke was educated at a boarding school in Dorset before attending Charlotte Mason College and Lancaster University. Roland started his teaching career in Lincolnshire before quickly moving to a boarding prep school in Hampshire. This was followed by several years spent in Guildford before starting at Davenies in 2003. Roland is a keen cyclist, kayaker and photographer, and is married with two children.
Assistant Head: Administration & Communication - Mr P Gibson
Having emigrated from South East London in the early 1980s, Philip Gibson was educated at the then Chesham High School before reading Education with Maths at St. Luke’s College, Exeter University. Upon graduating, Philip started Chesham Prep as a shy and retiring Maths and PE/Games teacher. Since joining Davenies in 1998, Philip has held the positions of Head of Maths, Head of IT and Assistant Director of Studies before elevating to the SLT in 2009 as Assistant Head. When not at Davenies, Philip is an avid watcher of egg-chasers, reader, film buff, failed Tour de France entrant, budding etymologist and Francophile.
Assistant Head: Head of Pre-Prep & Designated Safeguarding Lead - Mrs D Battersby
Deborah Battersby joined Davenies in 2012 as Head of Pre Prep. She started her teaching career at the British School of Bahrain, before returning to the UK. Deborah spent 10 years at Long Close School, her last six as Head of Pre Prep, and having achieved an MA in Education Leadership from the University of Buckingham Deborah is well placed to drive the Pre-Prep forward. Originating from Wales, Deborah enjoys watching rugby and spending time with her family.
Assistant Head: Head of Junior School - Mr J Stephenson
Joe Stephenson was educated at Lancing College before going to Leeds University to read History with Management. Joe spent a year at Chichester to study for his PGCE before taking on his first teaching role at Tavistock and Summerhill in Haywards Heath. Joe joined Davenies in 2010 as a Year 3 Form Teacher and is now Head of Junior School. In his spare time he enjoys reading thrillers and sports books, and spending time with his family.
Director of Studies - Mr A Tennant
Having graduated from university in Business Economics Andrew Tennant worked in London as a Head-Hunter for 5 years before joining the teaching profession. After obtaining his PGCE qualification Andrew took up the position of Maths Teacher at Davenies, the School he attended as a child. Andrew is now Head of Maths, Head of Scott House, co-invented the DAS programme for Years 7 & 8, and was also Maths co-ordinator for IAPS.
Deputy Head of Pre-Prep - Mrs S McIntosh
Samantha McIntosh was educated at Sutton High School for Girls and Lancing College. After qualifying with a BEd in Primary Studies from St. Luke’s College, Exeter University she taught in North Devon and Tunbridge Wells before joining Davenies in 2003. As well as being the lead Year 2 teacher, Samantha is the Deputy Head of Pre-Prep and is passionate about enthusing boys in whatever they are learning. Outside of school Samantha is a keen baker and camper.
Art - Mrs J Newell
Jacqueline Newell is originally from South Africa where she majored in English, Art and History at the University of Witwatersrand. Jacqui came to Davenies in 2006 having spent two years in Public Relations and Marketing, and is currently Head of Art and an Ambassador of Philosophy for Children. Outside Davenies Jacqui enjoys spending time with her young family and is searching for her next big adventure after a recent Arctic expedition.
Design & Technology - Mrs S Collins
Sarah-Jane Collins was educated at Thetford Grammar School and Great Yarmouth College of Art & Design. Sarah-Jane joined Davenies in September 2015 with over 15 years teaching experience having previously taught at St Clement Danes School and Dr Challoners High School. Sarah-Jane is Head of Design & Technology, Year 5 Form Tutor and Science Teacher (Year 5). Outside Davenies Sarah-Jane enjoys spending time with her family, keeping fit, gardening and cricket.
Drama - Mrs S Marshall
Sian Marshall trained in Musical Theatre at GSA Conservatoire, performing on the professional stage for several years, before studying for a BA (Hons) in Theatre Studies and gaining LAMDA teaching qualifications. Sian has taught at Davenies since 2011, having previously taught at Wellington College, introducing LAMDA to the school and opening up the Senior Production to all boys in Years 6 to 8. In her spare time Sian continues to tread the boards.
English - Mr C Wood
Chris Wood read English Literature at University in London before gaining his PGCE from the University of Oxford. Before he joined Davenies in 2015, Chris taught for many years in various grammar schools in the local area.
Geography - Mr P Scriven
Educated at Merchant Taylors’ and Birmingham University, Phillip Scriven came to Davenies in 2007 having taught at several day and boarding Prep schools. Alongside his role as Head of Geography he leads the pastoral team in Years 7 and 8 and offers courses for the older boys in SCUBA diving, power boating, kayaking, wakeboarding and sailing. In the evening Phillip returns home to a boarding school in High Wycombe where he is a Houseparent with his wife.
History - Miss S Bell
Sophie Bell attended Wycombe High School and went on to read Education with History at Homerton College, Cambridge. Sophie joined Davenies as a Gap Student in 2007 and having completed her GTP course with the University of Reading, she has now returned to take up the positions of Head of History and Year 6 Form Tutor. In her spare time Sophie enjoys baking and is an avid fan of the Great British Bake-Off.
IT - Mr J Jerrold (Maternity Cover)
Latin - Miss E Graham
On leaving school in Hastings Liz Graham went to Leicester University where she took a degree in Combined Studies, covering Latin, Greek, Archaeology and Geography. On gaining her PGCE at Nottingham, she began her teaching career at Dr Challoner’s Grammar School in Amersham as Head of Latin. Liz joined Davenies in 2006 as Head of Latin, bringing a wealth of cross-curricular interested with her.
Learning Support - Mrs Kate King
Kate King changed career in 2000 when her Montessori training led her to Specific Learning Difficulties. Kate has undertaken training in Dyslexia, difficulties in maths and Developmental Co-Ordination Disorder, and many different aspects of child development and learning difficulties. Kate left the Dragon School to join Davenies in 2012 as Head of Learning Support. Outside Davenies Kate enjoys spending time in the Alps, skiing and walking with her family.
Mathematics - Mr A Tennant
Having graduated from university in Business Economics Andrew Tennant worked in London as a Head-Hunter for 5 years before joining the teaching profession. After obtaining his PGCE qualification Andrew took up the position of Maths Teacher at Davenies, the School he attended as a child. Andrew is now Director of Studies, Head of Maths, and is also Maths Co-Ordinator for IAPS.
Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) - Mme V Chamberlain

After graduating from Carnegie College in Leeds with a Bachelor of Education degree in Physical Education, Robin Thomas taught for a year in Huddersfield before heading south to Bishop’s Stortford College. After seventeen years, ten of which were as Director of PE, Robin made the move to Davenies in 2005. Here, he is Head of PE and he coordinates the Primary Schools’ Sports Programme. Away from Davenies, Robin spends time with his family, takes every opportunity to head for the Welsh hills, runs and kayaks and he enjoys writing short stories for his children.
Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) - Mrs J Waiting
Judith Waiting attended AHS in Aylesbury and went on to read American Studies at the University of Hull. Judith came to Davenies in 2013 having spent 4 years working at High March School in Beaconsfield. She studied for her PGDE at the University of Glasgow and completed a Masters in Education which focused using creativity in the classroom to inspire learning in all children. Outside Davenies Judith enjoys keeping fit and going to see live music.
Science - Mr A Bell
Andy Bell graduated from Leicester with a degree in Chemistry and Business Studies and went on to obtain his PGCE at Liverpool. Andy joined Davenies in January 2015 with 15 years' experience of teaching Science from KS3 to KS5, and previously specialised in teaching Chemistry at A-Level. A sports fanatic who enjoys golf, football and running marathons, Andy currently plays on the Great Britain Tennis Vets Tour where he is ranked in the Top 30 in the country for his age group, and has played at Wimbledon for the last two years in the Great Britain Vets Championships. Andy is a qualified tennis coach and looks forward to using his vast experience to enhance Science and Tennis at Davenies.
EYFS Teacher - Mrs R Bailey
Rachel Bailey attended Wycombe High School and following this studied for a BEd Early Years Education at the University of Gloucestershire. After graduating she enjoyed travelling around Australia and South Africa before accepting her first teaching post at St Mary’s in Amersham. Rachel joined Davenies in September 2012 and teaches Reception, as well as running extra-curricular clubs for the Pre-Prep boys.
EYFS Teacher - Mrs J Peers
Year 1 Teacher - Mrs E Cowlam
Elaine Cowlam trained at the College of Sarum St. Michael, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Having taught for three years in England she worked with BFES in Germany and Hong Kong. On returning to England she completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Specific Learning Difficulties before joining Davenies in September 1998.
Year 1 Teacher - Mrs H Williams
Harriet Williams joined Davenies in 2006 as an EYFS Teacher, having spent 4 years at Twickenham Preparatory School. In March 2008 she left the school to bring up her twins, returning in 2011 to rejoin the Pre-Prep Team. Outside Davenies Harriet enjoys spending time with her growing children, painting and drawing, reading, and is also a keen runner.
Year 2 Teacher - Mrs S McIntosh

Year 2 Teacher - Miss S Clark
Sophie Clark studied English at St Martin’s College, Lancaster. Having started her career in her home county of East Yorkshire she went on to teach at the Sir James Henderson British School of Milan, Italy. Sophie returned to England in 2005 teaching at a small prep school in Ealing before joining Davenies in 2012 as a Year 2 Form Teacher and ICT Co-Ordinator. Outside of school Sophie enjoys painting, gardening and regular trips up to the Lake District.
Year 2 Teacher - Miss S Ross
French Teacher - Mme S Clarke
Sarah Clarke studied Economics and French at the University of Birmingham and Universite Paris 1 - Pantheon Sorbonne. Following a 10 year career in sales and marketing, living in the UK and overseas, she returned to the UK and completed her Primary PGCE with a French specialism at the University of Reading. Sarah spent several years as a primary form teacher and then joined the MFL Department at Davenies in 2015. Mme Clarke enjoys sport in her free time and volunteers as a youth netball and swimming coach in the local area.
